Everything you need before applying for your DOT & MC Authority.
Stay on track with important compliance filings and renewal deadlines.
No, an LLC is not required before applying for your DOT number. You can apply as a sole proprietor. However, we strongly recommend forming your LLC first because it protects your personal assets, looks more professional to brokers, and gives your business a solid legal foundation before you register with FMCSA.
After filing, FMCSA requires a mandatory 21-day waiting period before your MC Authority becomes active. During this time, anyone can protest the application. Once the 21 days pass with no protest, your authority is activated. Your DOT number is issued much faster — typically within 24–48 hours.
Government fees are payments made directly to federal or state agencies such as FMCSA, the IRS, or your state filing office. These fees are set by the government and are not controlled by Truck Mastery. Our service fee covers the work we do to prepare, file, and manage your paperwork. Both fees are always shown clearly before checkout — no surprises.
We do not sell insurance directly. However, we connect you with trusted insurance providers who specialize in commercial trucking coverage. Getting the right insurance is required before your MC Authority activates, and we make sure you understand exactly what coverage you need so you are fully compliant and ready to operate.
Once your MC Authority is approved and active, you are ready to start hauling legally. Here is what comes next:
